Indonesia names newly-discovered bird after first lady

JAKARTA, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo agreed to name a new species bird recently discovered in the nation's eastern province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) with a scientific code that associated with the first lady Iriana Joko Widodo, a minister said here Monday.

"I asked the president and he agreed to name the bird with scientific name associated with the first lady," Forestry and Environmental Affairs Minister Siti Nurbaya said on the sidelines with President Widodo at the presidential office.

The minister said that the new species bird from Meliphagidae family would get scientific name of Myzomela Irianae.

She said that the bird was discovered by Dewi Prawiradilaga, a researcher from Indonesia's Institute of Science (LIPI) in the province's Rote island.

The bird was immediately declared as a strictly protected animal, she added.

Describing the bird, the minister said that it weighs 32.23 grams, has a length of 17.2 centimeters from tip of the beak to the end of the tail. It has 5.8 centimeter length of wings, 1.79 centimeters of beak length, 3.7 centimeters of tail length and height of feet of 1.67 centimeters.
She added that the bird was a small beautiful one, emblazoned with various colors in its body.
