There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Takahe birds to be released into wild

The endangered Takahe bird are due to be released into the wild for the first time on the Auckland mainland today.

The 10 Takahe come from the Te Anau recovery programme were due to be released at Tawharanui Regional Park at 1pm.

The Department of Conservation says Tawharanui Regional Park has been chosen for the flightless bird as it's an open sanctuary with 580 hectares of predator-free parkland.

There are only 260 takahe in the world and 58 breeding pairs in New Zealand.
