'MEGA Rare' Bird Spotted At Loch Thom

BIRD watchers are travelling hundreds of miles to see an extremely rare pied-billed grebe which has turned up at Inverclyde beauty spot Loch Thom.

The bird was spotted by volunteer Lorna McCartney of Gourock who was carrying a monthly bird survey with the Clyde Muirshiel Park countryside ranger service. It was first listed as unknown while Lorna researched it and waited patiently for a confirmation.

Visitors have been flocking in from all over the country. Two came from Edinburgh before work one morning to see it. Another left home at 4am to travel from Gateshead, near Newcastle..

The pied-billed grebe is American in origin with year-round populations in the United States and South America. It is suspected that the Loch Thom one has been blown over the Atlantic. It is listed on the rare birds website as a ‘mega rarity’ in the UK -- their highest classification.
