As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Escaped emu loose in Cass County


A large, flightless bird is believed to be roaming eastern Cass County.

Authorities last saw Lucy the emu on Friday, running toward Schilling Wildlife Management Area.

On Tuesday, they said they think she was still at large somewhere south of the confluence of the Platte and Missouri rivers.

Lucy escaped from her owner’s farm near Louisville on April 27. The owner said he has had her and a male emu named Ricky as pets for the past eight or nine years.

Emus are native to Australia and can weigh 90 to 150 pounds and stand 6 feet tall as adults. They live between 10 and 20 years in the wild.
