Recent bushfires in the Murray Mallee may have wiped out one of the last remaining populations of a threatened bird species, according to the Environment Department.
Public lands manager Sonia Dominelli, said last month's bushfires affected 98 per cent of the Billiat Conservation Park and Wilderness Protection Area, near Alawoona.
Thousands of hectares of habitat were destroyed and many native species were affected, including a rare type of bird.
"Our predictions are low probability survival for Mallee Emu Wrens," she said.
Ms Dominelli says the huge loss of habitat will also impact on other native species.
"You know those big patches are the sort of last resort homes for those Mallee birds, so it's a significant loss."
