As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Common birds ‘dying out in large parts of Britain’

SEVERAL species of once-common birds are becoming extinct across large parts of Britain, a shocking report revealed yesterday.

They include cuckoo, snipe, lapwing and grey partridge – while the corn bunting, once a familiar sight on farmland, is now extinct in Ireland.

In contrast, the latest State Of The UK’s Birds report by the RSPB showed dramatic increases in species such as Canada goose, red kite and avocet.

But since 1995, turtle dove numbers have dropped by 95 per cent and willow tit by 85 per cent.
